Cognac Diamonds &
the Argyle Diamond
Mine
The Argyle Diamond
Mine is the richest diamond deposit in the world. It is situated near
Lake Argyle, a man-made dam at Smoke Creek in the remote north of
Western Australia. The Argyle Diamond Mine produces more than a third of
the world's total annual supply of pink, brown, and white diamonds.
And over 50% of the worlds brown (cognac) diamonds, the remainder are
found in Africa.
The Cost of Cognac Diamonds
Brown diamonds are usually less expensive than any other
colors due to the fact that they are less appealing to the majority of consumers.
For many years people have been used to the brilliance of clear, white
diamonds and the price depends more on popularity and fashion rather
than on rareness. Cognac colored diamonds sell at 30% less than
comparable white diamonds. The color descriptions of brown diamonds are now described and
marketed as Champagne or Cognac colored to increase their overall appeal.
And tastes in diamonds are changing - the existing and much lower
selling price of cognac colored diamonds make a very good selling point.
Cognac Diamonds
What exactly are Cognac Diamonds? Cognac diamonds have a tint of brownish
body color and the term Cognac is an alternative way of describing brown
diamonds. A Diamond can occur in nearly any color,
though yellow and brown are by far the most common. The Cognac diamond is a member of the Carbon family and is the
hardest substance known. The word Diamond is derived from the Greek word
"adamas" which means "hardest metal" reflecting the property of the
stone.
Definition of
Diamond Color
What is the Definition
of a Cognac Diamond? Colored
diamonds contain impurities or structural defects that cause the
coloration. The most common impurity, nitrogen, causes a slight to intense
yellow coloration depending upon the type and concentration of nitrogen
present. Brown or Cognac “amber” diamond crystals show some deformation called “brown
graining”. They also contain nitrogen.
The Color Scale or
Grade for Brown Diamonds
Argyle Diamonds
created the following scale for brown diamonds to separate them into
their progressively darker tone ranges which are described as follows:
